Beth Behrs Admitted She Didn't Even Own A Pair Of Heels Before Landing Her Role On '2 Broke Girls'

Beth Behrs life drastically changed after she was cast as Caroline Channing in 2 Broke Girls.

When Beth Behrs first auditioned for 2 Broke Girls, she didn't even have the financial means to buy or own the correct shoes.

When she auditioned for the popular CBS sitcom, Behrs was barely making ends meet. "I didn't even own a pair of high heels," she admitted to Drew Barrymore when appearing on her talk show. "I went to my audition for Caroline Channing in cowboy boots."

Her audition for Caroline Channing clearly worked as Behr landed the role on the show, which ran for six seasons. Behrs' character was a spoiled, rich girl who is forced to join the food service industry after she falls on hard times. She co-starred in the sitcom with Kat Dennings and Jennifer Coolidge, which ran from 2011 to 2017.

Beth Behrs admitted during a 2021 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show that she followed the advice of series creator Michael Patrick King and went shopping before attending her second audition. She was so broke that she didn't own a pair of heels, let alone the clothing required to audition for the role of a spoiled rich girl like Caroline.

"I had no money because I was a real broke girl," she explained. "I went to Nordstrom and kept all of the tags on my clothes and the label on the Steve Madden heels that I got."

"When Michael hugged me, he's like, 'Are there tags all over your clothes?'" she revealed before adding: "And I was like, 'Well, yes, because if I don't get this job, I have to return all these clothes. I can't afford them.'" Luckily, she did land the role!

Beth Behrs has always been honest about the life she had before landing the role on the hit CBS sitcom, which made her a household name. Before being cast in 2 Broke Girls, she had played Heidi in the direct-to-video America Pie Presents: The Book of Love and had small one-episode roles in Castle and NCIS.

Due to her unknown status in the industry, Behrs was working multiple jobs when she auditioned for 2 Broke Girls. "I was working as a nanny five days a week and then as a bartender and concierge at The Geffen Playhouse on the weekends," she told PopSugar.

The actress credits this busy schedule of working multiple jobs with helping her understand her role in the show. "I can definitely relate to being broke, right out of college and working tons of odd jobs to just pay the rent."

She admits she struggled with getting into the character's mindset. Caroline was a rich kid from a wealthy family who never worked a day in her life, something Beth struggled to connect with. "My parents both work in education — my mom's a teacher and my dad's a headmaster of a private school,"

As a result of her humble beginnings, Behrs was taught the value of money from a young age. She told PopSugar how her parents gave her a weekly allowance and that once it was gone, there was nothing she can do.

When Beth Behrs started filming 2 Broke Girls, she had an unhealthy diet and generally did not take care of herself in the way she should. "I was eating all the junk food they kept on set," the actress admitted to Self back in 2017.

She started to get a long-lasting skin rash, which caused the star to cover up her body on red carpets and at public appearances. The doctors informed her that this skin condition happened due to stress, a bad diet, and a lack of exercise. "When 2 Broke Girls happened, I was working all day, doing physical comedy. My skin developed this crazy rash all over my body.”

The Neighbourhood star confessed to Yahoo! Lifestyle that her "mortifying" rash was probably due to "go-to breakfast [of] two sugar doughnuts," while she was also "eating mac and cheese from the box" for dinner. This was a wake-up call which forced Behrs to change her diet, incorporate exercise, and get fit, healthy, and happy.

“My immune system was incredibly compromised. My doctor told me I had to learn how to handle stress and change my diet. It felt so overwhelming. I wasn’t doing any of it,” Behrs had candidly explained.

The actress has also been open about the mental health she struggled with when she landed her dream role in 2 Broke Girls. The star has been open about the fact she has suffered debilitating anxiety and panic attacks most of her life. Through trial and error, the star's life is no longer controlled by these conditions.

She has found meditation hugely positive in her life, especially if she is unable to hit the gym. "I notice a massive difference in how my whole day goes if I don't do it," the self-described Type-A personality explained during an interview with Self. The actress is also a keen equestrian and practices equine therapy twice a week to help manage her panic attacks.

Beth went on to write a book about overcoming her personal and health struggles. She is still a fan of meditation and takes regular social media breaks. “I’m still learning to slow down. There’s something about happiness and slowing down and being in the moment — turning your phone off and stirring your soup — I want you to feel that what you can do is enough,” the star has admitted.
